The role of the department

The Strategic Projects Team was established in 2002, as part of the Planning + Facilities Division, to manage the major strategic projects planned for Musgrove Park Hospital over the next 10 to 15 years.  From a standing start the Team has and continues to manage several separate but integrated schemes (some already completed), details of which can be found on this site.

Current projects
Construction of the new Cancer Centre, which is being procured under the Government's Private Finance Initiative, is now well underway.  It is on programme for completion in May 2009 and will accommodate the existing hospital chemotherapy and outpatient services, together with a new radiotherapy unit with two Elekta linear accelerators, a CT simulator and an 18 bed inpatient ward.

Construction of a new 1,500mē three storey office building is close to completion and is due to be occupied in February 2008.  The project is part of the enabling works for the proposed development to replace the old surgical facilities in that it will allow the finance and personnel departments to be relocated and the buildings they currently occupy to be demolished.

Feasibility studies are being undertaken to replace the World War II Old Buildings that currently have the surgical wards, theatres, medical offices and critical care facilities.  Originally the new Surgical facilities  were conceived as being provided under the Government's Private Finance Initiative, but the hospital's change of status to Foundation Trust offers other opportunities to provide the funding to progress this exciting project.

Future projects
In order to provide the necessary land on which to develop the new  Surgical facilities, other enabling projects for the new office building will need to be implemented.  These include provision of a new building to house the main switchboard and exchange, and one of the two main computer rooms; relocation of the therapies department and Trust Management offices onto the vacant Alfred Morris House site; and a new support services building to house porters, post room, central stores, kitchen, waste storage and improved delivery/collection facilities.

Completion of these enabling projects and the new surgical facilities will be followed by the reprovision of the Women's and Children's Department into a new building linked to the surgical buildings, new improved pathology facilities, and improvement to the site access roads and landscaping.

For more information on the Trust's plans for the long term development of the site please view the Future Site Development pages.

Completed projects

The Strategic Projects Team is proud to have completed a number of projects which have contributed to the overall improvement in services and the environment for staff, patients and visitors.  These include:

  • A new day nursery, operated by Tops Nurseries, as a enabling project for the new Cancer Centre;

  • Musgrove Park Academy which provided an extension to the Postgraduate Centre to offer practical training facilities for medical students and nurses from the Universities of Bristol and Plymouth and to act as a multi-professional learning environment for all staff;

  • Provision of a new traffic light controlled road junction on A38 Wellington Road to provide the main vehicular access to the hospital;

  • In conjunction with a local property developer, construction of a new building close to the centre of Taunton for Somerset Occupational Health;

  • The construction of a new 735 space multi-storey car park as a Public Private Partnership with Q Park who will operate and maintain all on-site car parking for a period of 25 years from October 2006;

  • Provision of new facilities adjacent to A & E for the Out-of-Hours service and reconfiguration of A & E to upgrade the waiting area and provide separate paediatric facilities;
