The control of infection has been a central component of public health
practice for over 150 years and though the mortality has vastly
reduced, morbidity and emerging diseases remain an important threat to
the health of the population.
Somerset Coast PCT is responsible for monitoring and controlling
communicable disease in the area, through the Somerset Health Protection
Unit, based at Wellsprings Road, Taunton. Outbreaks and communicable
disease concerns in the community are the remit of the HPU whilst for those
in hospitals we contract Taunton and Somerset Infection Control Service.
